Celebrating 20 years: Greystone contributes $500,000 to Bereavement Centre

There's an old saying, "what's in a name?"  For Regina Palliative Care Inc. (RPCI), the answer is a huge amount of corporate goodwill - a long-term financial commitment that will lead to the establishment of the Greystone Bereavement Centre.

"We are deeply honoured that the Greystone Bereavement Centre bears our name," said Robert Vanderhooft, Chief Executive and Chief Investment Officer, Greystone Managed Investments Inc.  "We Believe that our contribution of $500,000 will hepl RPCI achieve its vision for the centre to become a safe and caring haven, where grieving individuals will receive special attention and support to move through the pain of their loss towards healing and hope."

Since its inception, Greystone has grown to become one of the largest independent money managers in Canada, earning a reputation for proving high quality, individualized customer service for its clients across North America.  But it has also earned a reputation for remaining focused on supporting local causes in Regina, home to its head office and many of the employees who have made Greystone the success it is today.

On May 14, RPCI was proud to announce its new centre will be called the Greystone Bereavement Centre following the company's donation of $500,000.  The centre will be unique in Canada, offering a wide range if programming and services to assist people in finding a new normal in life following the death of a loved one.  Counselling expertise combined with education around the grieving process will ensure that each client receives the right care, in the right place, at the right time.

"2008 marks Greystone's 20th year in business, and this donation is one celebration of that milestone," Vanderhooft explained.  "We at the Greystone make our homes here.  We enjoyed our first successes as a firm here.  Our company's values stress taking personal and collective action to enrich the quality of life in our community."

Greystone certainly walks the talk.  The company's Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer Elaine Bourassa is a past-President of RPCI.  For years, emplayess at Greystone have been participating in fundraising events for palliative care, including the annual 35-kilometre Fun Bike Ride for Palliative Care and the Sticks on Rose Street Hockey Classic.

Bourassa says her involvement with palliative care over the years has brought her many rewards.  She is grateful to work with a company that recognizes the importance of helping people deal with their reaction to loss.

"Death can create on of the most isolating experiences a person can have," Bourassa said.  "It's something that can go unrecognized in the workplace and in the braoder commmunity.  The support of caring people, and a safe place in which toexpress thoughts and felliengs i crucial in helping people move through their loss towards healing and hope."

Bourassa notes that just as Greystone is celebrating a significant milestone in its company's history, so too is Regina Palliative Care Inc.  "This year marks our 25th year of partnering with Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region in providing palliative care services.  These programs are highly respected across the country.  The competion of the Greystone Bereavement Centre will ensure that Regina continues to lead the way in providing support programs and services to people of Saskatchewan for many more years to come."
